Thumbs down Wolf killing in Sweden now legal :0(

Quote:
10 000 hunters to shoot 27 wolves
Quote:

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

Stockholm / TT

This winter 27 wolves are to be shot in Sweden, during the first general license hunting of wolves in 45 years. This is equivalent to just over one tenth of the Swedish wolf population. Over 10 000 hunters asked to participate. But the hunt is contrary to EU legislation, says Society for Nature Conservation.

The hunting license decision is a result of the parliament ruled that the wolf population in the country must not exceed 210 animals and 20 new litters will be born each year, similar to the situation today. So is the acceptance of the wolf increase, while retaining a viable wolf population.

Wolf Scientists have estimated that 30-48 wolves should be included in licensed and protective hunts in order to achieve objectives of Parliament. The Environmental Protection Agency has stopped at 27 animals depend on that five wolves taken through protective hunts since 1 March this year, a new decision on the protective and taken a dozen other requests for protective treatment now.

An experiment
More than 10 600 hunters have expressed a wish to participate in the hunt, which will run January 2 -15 February. Susanna Löfgren, Head Office Viltforvaltning department, admits that winter hunting can be seen as an experiment.

"We must evaluate and learn from it and the next winter season, then adjust the regulatory framework," she says.

Swedish Hunters Association welcomes licensed hunting but Swedish predator association is critical.

"It feels like an risky venture where you play with very small margins," said Secretary Ann Dahlerus.

They receive the support of the Nature Conservation Organization, which believes that hunting is contrary to EU law.

"We will submit a formal complaint to the commission. In order to allow licensed hunting of a protected species must be species have attained so-called 'favorable' conservation status, something that certainly is not the case with the difficult inbred Swedish-Norwegian wolf population," said Oscar Alaric environmental lawyer at the Conservation Society said in a statement.

Next year a decision on the hunting license delegated to provincial governments. In order to strengthen it difficult inbred wolf population is not more than 20 new genetically valuable wolves brought in from the east the years 2010-2014.

Most in Värmland and Dalarna
The licensed hunt distributed among the top five wolves counties, where the litters were born each year in the last three years. Värmland and Dalarna may shoot nine wolves each while Västra Götaland, Örebro and Gävleborg may make three wolves each.

In Gävleborg allowed no hunting in the Galven region where migrated genetically healthy wolves live. Västra Götaland may not shoot all six wolves in Kroppefjäll territory.

The Environmental Protection Agency sets a series of requirements on licensed hunting. Hunting leader to every hour to keep up to date on the number of taken wolves to not risk more than the permitted number. The wolf and the place where it was killed shall also be inspected.

Hunters may find wolf tracks in the car and the terrain scooter or quad bike, but only along existing roads.
"They must not persecute wolves", says Ola Larsson Environmental Protection Agency.

The only good part is this

"In order to strengthen it difficult inbred wolf population is not more than 20 new genetically valuable wolves brought in from the east the years 2010-2014."

No license to hunt the wolf!

2 January 2010 is the start of the first more extensive hunting of wolves in Sweden since the beginning of last century. More than 12 000 wolf hunters have signed up to shoot 27 wolves in the five counties Dalarna, Värmland, Gävleborg, Örebro and Surrey. Not since 1920 has been hunting of wolves in this scale conducted in Sweden. More than 10% of Sweden's wolf population is pushed away, even though there are no more than 230-250 wolves. The hunt has no scientific basis and contrary to EU nature conservation law.

Make your voice heard, write the list below, which will be sent to Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren and the politicians of the Environment and Agriculture Committee.

Default Please write under this petition to try to stop the wolf hunt in Sweden

Quote:
Society for Nature Conservation has decided to report the Swedish government to the EU Commission in response to Saturday's hunting of wolves.

As expected, it was out of control. Although we may have shot too many animals in certain counties the hunt will continue, "said President Mikael Karlsson to DN.se news.

In he’s eyes are wolf hunt a display of medieval behaviour:
- It emits 12,000 hunters with intense desire to get a wolf skins on the wall, to go out and hunt. When only 27 animals may be shoot. It is a wild chase on the wolf.

According to Mikael Karlsson wolf population is critically endangered with extinction, one of the most endangered mammals in Sweden, he notes.
  • For hunting to be allowed requires a so-called "favourable conservation status", therefore, that the wolf population is viable. The government does not know if it is. It goes without saying that 210 individuals are not sufficient.
-Politicians have, according to Mikael Karlsson, yielded to the small but noisy special interests. And now the Society for Nature Conservation has decided to report the Swedish government to the EU commission.
  • The hope is of course a conviction. We have been warning of this - I am ashamed. It is tragic and it threatens the wolf population. And it is embarrassing for the Swedish Nature Conservation who has been leading since the 60th century.
- however a conviction will not save the damage that is already done.

Hunting of wolves in Sweden started today again!

Despite massive protests from Animal Friends Worldwide and from EU have few people decided that 20 Wolves will be shot.

6.747 Hunters have started the Wolf Hunt. The risk that more wolves will be shot is great though hunters must report to the County Board each time a wolf is shot.

So far, 9 wolves out of the 20 have been shot today.

PLEASE write to EU and protest against the Swedish Wolfhunt. The EU-Commission is now planning to take actions. Here you find a letter in english as a suggestion: https://naturskyddsforeningen.wufoo....ves-in-sweden/

License hunting under controlled conditions or recreational massacre?

I think that there are a lot of shameful issues to raise in the case of Sweden's licensed hunting on wolves and the media's reporting, such as the following:

1st – EU processes would already have been started, unless the government has decided, at the last moment, to submit additional documents - documents that were also developed by the main hunting federation and chalet business. Suddenly, they had made themselves a party to the case where environmental groups appealed the government's decision. Too bad we, the environmental conservationists, were not aware of this at the time.

In other words, without the intervention of the government, the licensed hunt could perhaps have been canceled. Then the government would have had a hot potato on their hands, having had to deal with the hunters associations to whom they already had promised this hunt in exchange for their votes in the elections to Parliament. Apparently though, the government prefers to be negatively exposed to all of Europe, rather than facing the hunter's associations.

2nd – Although the government has received serious warning signals from the European Commission, they chose to ignore this and to produce half-baked truths. Do not forget that the letter was also very timely lost - due to Carlgren because of this winter's terrible weather conditions - and that it was not found until it was too late, i.e., December 17, the same day the Environmental Agency was to produce the decision about the hunt. Adding to this, Carlgren's response to the EU Commissioner, Mr. Protocnik, was not official and known to anyone other than the Swedish Hunting Association until early January!

This was regarded so seriously by the EU Commission that they sent another letter and this time they went out with a press release to be really sure that it would not be “lost” again in the Swedish winter weather conditions. The warnings from the EU are very clear: Call off the licensed hunt until the EU has decided how to proceed.

And that's what a wise and prudent government would have done. Unfortunately, the Swedish media did not choose to publish these matters at all. Why not? The media should have perhaps paid attention to the fact that many people notice everything that goes on, and that they are extremely frustrated. So frustrated that they are going out in the woods and fields to at least try to do something for our endangered species, the wolf.

Conclusion 1: Neither the government nor certain media are acting with responsibility. However, can you imagine the headlines when the EU launches possible infringement proceedings against Sweden? Then the tunes are going to be heard loud and quite different. Then they will highlight the government's bad conduct and behavior. Then, and only then, there will be shocking headlines!

Conclusion 2: Lots of people are in despair, and the hatred and antagonism is much more extensive than ever before.

Conclusion 3: An endangered animal is exposed to an amusement massacre, carried out by more than 8,000 hunters. Animals are seriously wounded and tormented. Families are being shattered. Young puppies are left alone again. Nothing is done under the controlled conditions that were promised, and we are seeing the tragedy unfold again.

(Old) news From 17/1 2011
Quote:
European Commissioner, Janez Potocnik, says he is going to propose to the EU Commission that it begin formal proceedings against Sweden for breach of EU environmental during last weekend's wolf hunt.

In a press release, Potocnik says that "We have been in intensive dialogue with the Swedish government, which has been aware of the Commission's concerns about the legality of the hunt for a long time."
Green Party MEP Carl Schlyter says he welcomes the Commission's move, "When the government doesn't do its job, it's good that the Commission does it", he said.

I will never support the senceless killing of animals (hence one of the reasons why I'll never vote for a rather popular politician here).

Kill for food - fine. Kill toprotect yourself or your property - fine (note: this does not include pre-emptive).

Kill for sport / trophy - hell no.

Hopefully these hunts will get shot down (no pun intended).

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency - NVV , will take a closer look at the situation with the wolves in Riala, Stockholm.
They will investigate whether they think there is a "protection hunt" needed.

There has been a few incidents with wolves, a bit to curious.
The wolves have left any situation, with a human involved, as wolves do.
Curiosity is not a strange thing, since they live close to people, people will see them from time to time.

There are most likely small puppies in this wolf pack, they must not be disturbed !!!

The pack should not be disturbed anyway, but especially not now !!

The link for the petition seems to be dead, or at least it's not working on my computer, I'm getting a message saying "Invalid compression used" or something similar. More sad news concerning wolves in Sweden here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14533400 meaning that it's even more important to keep the pressure up on the Swedish government.

Swedish news today

Quote:
There are no licensed hunting of wolves this winter. The government makes a stop in licensed hunting, but expands the possibilities for controlled hunting of problem wolves, or groups of wolves. In addition, the government temporarily removed the ceiling on the maximum of 210 wolves in Sweden.

.......

It appears from the Government's response to the European Commission in their criticism of the Swedish licensed hunting of wolves.

According to Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren (C) is thought to restore licensed hunting winter 2012-2013. The abolition of the ceiling of 210 wolves, approved by Parliament, is under Carlgren not to an unlimited number of wolves is allowed in Sweden.

- Of course not. We will achieve a favorable conservation status of wolves, but with so few wolves as possible, he says.

The article continues ...
The extended protection in the winter to hunt under Carlgren based on security grounds. It can be about wolves attacking livestock or that a growing number of wolves has caused inconvenience to residents of the wolf counties.

The Minister can not answer how much the wolf population could be with the new policy.

- I do not want to speculate on it, says Mr Carlgren.

The idea is that the government next year will present a new target for the number of wolves in Sweden.

Carlgren emphasizes that the changes that the Government now decided is necessary for Sweden to retain decision-making power over the Swedish wolf hunting. According to Carlgren was a continued violation of EU Commission on licensed hunting have risked that last for several years before the question was finally settled.

Andreas Carlgren believes that the EU Commission initially acted very rushed and rigid in their dispute with Sweden on wolf hunting.

- Decisions should be made as close to people as possible, therefore, the Commission's action unfortunate, he says.

- Sweden predator policy should be conducted with great consideration and respect for those who bear the consequences of living with a predator, that is, the rural population.
