Domyślnie Vlcaks’ talents and their practical application

I think it might be interesting to share stories about more or less surprising abilities of our dogs

I've discovered my vlcak can easily distinguish our neighbour from her identical twin sister that comes to visit her almost every day. The ladies are over 70, dress identically, use the same perfumes, but Lorka’s nose recognizes them without any problem (she’s better than DNA testing! ) The fact itself is not surprising, but her reaction is: when greeting our neighbour she gives her a delicate lick on the hand, and when greeting the sister only wags her tail. The neighbour complimented us recently that we were the only people from outside their immediate family that managed to address them correctly. If only she knew the source of our smartness!

Another example which I described on the Polish forum some time ago: my husband brought home two pieces of Lybian glass, about 1lb each and put them on the table. Lybian glass is a rock of very mysterious and controversial origin that can be found only in limited area of Sahara. It's said to have some esoteric qualities, of which I know nothing and have always been very sceptical!
To our surprise our dog delicately took one piece of the rock from the table, put in on the floor in front of her and looked at it intensely, then cautiously tested it with her tongue and teeth… finally put a paw on it and stayed like that for a while with a very “silly” face expression. Later, repeated the same procedure with the other stone. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it. We have a lot of rocks at home, but never have I seen such behaviour earlier of Lorka or Tina, nor other dogs. I can’t really interpret this…

Have any of your wolfdogs’ abilities or behaviour ever surprised you in one way or another?

At the risk of making myself sound like a drunk...(I am not, in fact I can only drink one or 2 drinks and feel the effects heavily ).

If I am at home with friends, and we are having a few drinks - even around a fire outside - my Bongo recognizes immediately the moment I have had "enough". He will come grab my hand until I take his collar, and he leads me straight to my bed! I didn't intentionally train him for this, but I do have a habit, when I have had "enough", to at least put the dogs away for the night and sometimes go to bed myself. I think he has learned to smell the level of alcohol in my blood - and knows it is time for his dinner and bed time! Funny thing is, I don't drink too often - they just learn so fast! Maybe this has some application in law enforcement for drunk drivers!

Brukne uses her ability to know that people had a party and will sleep better than allways in other way - she is not that kindhearted. These are the times she feels free to open all the kitchen cupboards, take various nuts, cocoa, sugar powder, eat part of it, spread the other part around all over the kitchen. Open the gabage can and take the good things from there to her own place
Rona, amazing story, I got interested in these stones.

While walking along the street with my dog I noticed someody in front of me had his rucksack half open, so I advised him to close it. It turned out he was from the USA and we exchanged a couple of pleasantries. I immediately forgot about this incident, that lasted no more than a minute or two.

Four days later when I was walking with Lorka in another (busy!) part of the city suddenly she decided to greet a stranger. Naturally I didn't recognize him, he was dressed differently and accompanied by a few other people, whom she ignored. Remembering that vlcaks are very rational I quickly tried to analyse the situation and .... recognized the rucksack. After a while he recognized Lorka :P

Incredible scent memory!

Hi, I am in the UK and unfortunately seem to find it impossible to get good, honest information about the CSV, the 2 websites i came across which look decent do not have a contact number on them only a contact form which i find odd???

Would it be possible for you or someone else to give me advise on this beautiful dog?

lol, everything!!!! :-)

I have posted a post to everyone, please read, sorry its a quite long....

Hi All,

Please excuse me if what i am asking is very basic information, this is all very new to me but i would like to make the right choice for me, my family and the dog i am looking for.

First of all i am not looking to buy for at least a year, maybe longer, so i am researching for the time being. From what i have gathered on various on line pages is that this dog can be hard to handle, especially for novices or someone who has not had a dog in the past like me......

I think a lot of this is down to the training and socialisation given to the CSV and my thinking is that as long as you get the CSV as a pup then it will grow with you and become the dog you want it to be. I have always wanted a German Shepherd dog for its intelligence, my friend mentioned a Chez Border dog, and i stumbled upon the GSV and well it was love at first sight .

I guess id like to know if you guys think i can handle such an animal? i have never owned any dog before, this can be an advantage im told???? u see im quite an active person, so the dog would be with me first thing in the morning for a 30 min jog, then returned to its kennel (which is a large shed outdoors, the shed is approx 20ft in length and 10ft in width) whilst i am at work, my partner would feed it whilst i am at work. Upon returning from work i would take the CSV for a stroll in the park for an hour or so. this would be the routine from Mon - Fri, during the weekends i cycle approx 10k so again the CSV would be with me whilst i cycle as id like to make sure it gets enough exercise. I would change the routes i take as regularly as i can to make sure the CSV does not get bored.

can you guys advise if the environment i have described would be suitable for the CSV or would it require constant attention each day, all day, every day?????

I would appreciate any advise you guys can part with.

Many thanks
