How did you pick your kennel name?

I know I'm a ways off from needing it, but whenever I get bored, I start wondering what my kennel name is going to be whenever I get around to starting one. I can never think of anything good! So I figured I'd take a pole. :)

What is the name of your kennel? What does it translate to (if applicable)? Where did you get the name from?

I thought if I hear stories of other people's experiences, I might get inspired myself! :p

My name came from the branch of the creek that runs behind my house (more of a stream/swamp really!) - Galomy Creek, and the big oak that faces my house. I like the symbolism of oak trees. I liked the sound, it doesn't have the cheesy factor, and it's unique.

"La manada de Tuky" ("The herd of Tuky" )... not very original, but it is a name that suggests they are mine, I was advised that the name of the kennel were something that I also represent myself and my dogs in my area (not just the wolfdog) are known as "Tuky dogs" ... so it was easy to decide as a group saw this as united as heterogeneous

I did not choose it . I wrote my ideas about name of my kennel to ČMKU (czech dog union). There was 5 nice names (like Egerland,....) and 6. was my last idea- Od Úhoště. And they choosed this last name!
So: Úhošt (read like uuhoscht) is basalt table mountain near of my city. It is rarity, there is on the top of mountain much kinds of bush plants, it is place not typicle for my area.
You can translate name of my kennel "Od Úhoště" like "from mountain Uhost".

Casa del Mango - The House of Mango.

Mango was my wife's first Belgian malinois. We had a couple others (she thought of Salt Creek from the brackash waters around the New Jersey coast and Spitfire (our collie is Orion's Spitfire MacLeod)) but after Mango passed she went with Casa del Mango.

Czech "Střípek snů" - "Stripek snu" if you don't see it right - means "A little piece of dreams" and that's what my dogs are to me.

Our first choice was Tatra´s what is the name we use for Gerda z Rofa the origin bitch of our breeding and it is the nome of two mountain areas in Slovakia. But Tatra was already taken though not longer used:cry: and the VDH took our second choice (you have to send three psibilities). Zlatá Palz means goldene Pfalz what is a very famous wine area in Germany we live in.

Excellent Topic

I got my first choice :) which is kind of strange, as I got tooled later on, one is not allowed to use the breeds name by the Swedish kennel club nor a country name or words like "on" "of" "in"…

And as me kennel name is Wolfdog of Sweden I kind of had 0 point right in my application  But I guess that they did like it anyway or had a very happy day. Or maybe they just felt sorry for me, because I could not read

I wanted to name my kennel this because, I wonted it to show on the WD planned litter that I was located in Sweden and for the ones in Sweden to know that I was breeding Wolfdogs ;-)

Best regards / Mikael

I love hearing these stories! It seems really common for people to pick names based on where they're located & what features are around. Don't think I have anything quite so inspiring living in a boring suburb of Chicago!

Helenasotis 07-04-2010 22:52

Sotis = Dog Star Sirius :) (this is ancient Egyptian word)
This name is short and without diacritic - I mean, that it´s important too ;-) (this name is not a problem to correctly pronounce or write)

Hello,

I call my female Caya very often "little witch" - because she behaves like it:roll:

Malá Bosorka is the slovak translation. I wanted to get a connection to Slovakia as country of origin.
